What Is Botox Cosmetic?
Botox® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) is an FDA-approved injectable that temporarily relaxes the muscles behind frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet, and vertical neck bands.
At our practice serving the Myrtle Beach and Florence areas, every injection is administered by Dr. Kevin M. Sattele, MD (his full credentials are on our medical spa page). Treatment starts with a consultation that screens your health history.

What Botox Treats
Botox smooths dynamic wrinkles, the lines created by repeated muscle movement:
- Frown lines: the vertical “11” creases between the eyebrows (glabellar lines).
- Forehead lines: the horizontal creases that show when you raise your brows. These are usually treated together with the frown-line muscles between the brows: relaxing the forehead alone can let the brows drop and feel heavy, so your injector plans the two areas as a pair.
- Crow’s feet: the lines fanning from the outer corners of the eyes.
- Vertical neck bands: the platysma-muscle bands that stand out from jaw to neck; the newest FDA-approved treatment area. Off-label uses such as a lip flip (relaxing the upper lip so more of it shows) and jaw slimming (relaxing the masseter muscle) exist for the right candidate

What Happens At Your Botox Appointment
Below is a general overview of the typical steps involved in a Botox® consultation and treatment.
- Consultation. Health history and medication review, examination of your areas, candidacy confirmed.
- Mapping. Your injector watches your expressions and marks the specific muscles creating each line.
- Injections. A fine needle places several small injections per area; most people find each injection a brief pinch.
- Afterwards. You go straight back to your day; the smoothing builds over the following days.

Common Questions About Botox®
Healthy adults bothered by frown lines, forehead lines, or crow’s feet who want a non-surgical fix are typical candidates; because Botox is a prescription medication, your provider confirms this after the health-history review (exclusions in the facts table). Botox for men, sometimes called Brotox, works the same way; heavier male facial muscles often just need more units. Mention blood thinners and NSAID pain relievers at your visit, since both raise bruising risk; Cleveland Clinic’s prep guidance also advises skipping alcohol for the 24 hours before treatment. If Botox is a poor fit for your goals, you will hear that straight, with alternatives..
Same-day aftercare:
- Stay upright for about the first 4 hours (the “4-hour rule”).
- Skip strenuous exercise until the next day.
- Do not rub or massage the treated areas; this keeps the product where your injector placed it.
- Tiny bumps at injection sites settle quickly; a small bruise can take a few days.
Call us if anything feels wrong, and seek care promptly for swallowing, speaking, or breathing difficulty.
Botox has been used cosmetically under FDA approval for more than two decades; side effects in its label trials were mostly mild and temporary: injection-site redness, swelling, or bruising, headache (9%, forehead-line trials), and eyelid drooping (3%, frown-line trials) that resolves as the product wears off.
The label carries the FDA’s boxed warning for distant spread of toxin effect (symptoms such as swallowing or breathing difficulty), and per the same label no definitive serious case has been reported at labeled cosmetic doses. Screening and correct dosing are why a medical provider administers every treatment here.
89% of people treated (362 of 405) rated their frown-line improvement as moderate or better 30 days after treatment in the manufacturer’s clinical trials behind the FDA approval, versus 7% with placebo. That figure comes from the product’s published trial data, not from measured outcomes at our clinic, and individual
Dysport®, Xeomin®, Jeuveau®, and Daxxify® are other botulinum toxin injectables; practical differences are modest for most patients. Per the Botox Cosmetic label, its potency units are specific to the product and cannot be converted into units of any other botulinum toxin, so quotes cannot be compared unit for unit across brands. At our centers we offer Botox®.
Early fading usually traces to dose (too few units for the muscle’s strength), very active facial muscles, or fast individual metabolism of the product. If results fade well ahead of schedule, come back in: your provider reviews dose and placement and adjusts the plan.
Unlike hyaluronic-acid fillers, which can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, Botox has no dissolver; the effect fades on its own as nerve-to-muscle signaling returns. This is why conservative dosing matters: adding units at a follow-up is easy, subtracting them is impossible.
A frozen or “surprised” look comes from over-dosing or misplaced injections, both technique problems; your injector maps the muscle behind each line before placing a unit and starts with a conservative dose, so expressions stay natural.
There is no set age; the trigger is your lines, not your birthday. Lines that show only during expressions (dynamic lines) respond to small preventative doses, which is why many patients start in their late 20s or 30s, while lines that stay visible at rest often do best pairing Botox with a filler. And if your face is smooth at rest with nothing lingering after expressions, the honest advice is to wait; sunscreen and skincare are the better investment at that stage.
Because the result takes about two weeks to settle, book at least two weeks before a wedding, reunion, or photos. Give yourself three weeks if you are new to Botox, so there is room for a two-week review and a small touch-up if a muscle needs a little more.
The Botox Cosmetic label lists no interaction with GLP-1 medications such as Compounded Semaglutide; the interactions it flags are aminoglycoside antibiotics and other neuromuscular agents, muscle relaxants, anticholinergics, and other botulinum toxin products. The real consideration is timing: fast weight loss often changes the face itself, so if you are mid-loss Dr Sattele plans Botox alongside any volume work; see fillers page.
No. Bags under the eyes come from fat and fluid, not muscle movement, so Botox does not treat them.
Botox Cosmetic has been in FDA-approved cosmetic use since 2002. With regular repeat treatment the injected muscles stay relaxed for longer stretches, and dose is re-evaluated at every visit rather than repeated on autopilot; if you stop, movement returns, and the lines gradually follow.
