What is Mesotherapy?
Mesotherapy is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment that involves injecting a customized blend of vitamins, enzymes, hormones, and other active ingredients into the mesoderm, the middle layer of the skin. This technique is used to rejuvenate the skin, reduce body fat and address various aesthetic concerns. At our MedSpa, Dr. Kevin M. Sattele, MD, provides injectable mesotherapy for cellulite and localized fat in the Myrtle Beach and Florence areas, at our three (3) South Carolina locations across the Grand Strand and Pee Dee. Contact us today at (843) 636-7018 to schedule a free consultation with Dr. Sattele and learn more about Mesotherapy and the other services we offer at our medical spa.
Mesotherapy vs CoolSculpting, Emsculpt, and Kybella
Mesotherapy is one of several treatments used to address stubborn fat or body contouring concerns. This table provides a general comparison between Injectable mesotherapy compared with the device and injectable alternatives available locally.
| Factor | Injectable mesotherapy | Contouring devices (CoolSculpting, Emsculpt) | Kybella® |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Micro-injections of a customized blend into the fat and connective-tissue layer | External applicators: fat freezing (cryolipolysis) or electromagnetic muscle stimulation | Prescription deoxycholic acid injections |
| FDA status | Not approved for fat or cellulite; used off-label | FDA-cleared devices for fat reduction or muscle toning | FDA-approved, only for under-chin (submental) fat |
| Targets | Cellulite dimpling and localized fat, spot by spot | Fat bulges or muscle tone; not placed into dimples themselves | Double chin only |
| Delivered by | Physician and nurse practitioner in a medical clinic | Varies by provider; often technician-operated | Licensed injector |
Choose a device if FDA clearance is the deciding factor for you; consider mesotherapy if you want an injection placed into the dimpled area itself and adjusted spot by spot; Kybella applies only when the concern is under the chin. For facial lines or lost volume, the right tools are Botox® or dermal fillers instead.
Mesotherapy treats areas, not pounds
Mesotherapy works only on the area injected and does not produce meaningful weight loss. If your goal is losing pounds, start with our physician-supervised medical weight-loss program instead.
What Mesotherapy Treats
Treatment Area
Cellulite
Cellulite is an accumulation of fat, fluid, and toxins trapped in a hardened network of connective tissue fibers in the Mesoderm layer. The fat cells inflate, causing a rippling and puckering of the skin, commonly referred to as orange peel skin. Lymphatic and venous circulation is poor in these areas. Mesotherapy is used to cause an increase in venous and lymphatic flow, as well as the elimination of fat and dimpling in the area. A patient’s skin appears significantly smoother.
Treatment Area
Localized Fat
The medications that are used in Mesotherapy melt the fat beneath the skin and kill the fat cells in the treatment area. The fat dissolves and, as occurs when fat is broken down during typical weight loss, is carried through the bloodstream and excreted. As mesotherapy dissolves fat, inches can be lost. With those losses of inches also goes the loss of weight from the reduction of fat and water retained in the tissue.

Common Questions About Mesotherapy
Common side effects are local and temporary: redness, swelling, bruising, and tenderness at the injection sites, usually settling within a few days. Good candidates are generally healthy adults at or near a stable weight with specific dimpled or diet-resistant areas. Pregnancy and breastfeeding, blood thinners or a bleeding disorder, an active skin infection at the treatment site, and a known allergy to any component of the blend all rule it out. Because the treatment is off-label, screening comes first: Dr. Sattele reviews your health history and current medications before recommending mesotherapy, and will tell you straight when a different option would serve you better.
Mesotherapy is also used off-label on localized fat pockets that hold on after weight stabilizes: the stomach and lower abdomen, love handles, inner thighs, and a double chin. The Mesotherapy solution is injected into the treated area, with the goal of a softer-looking contour over a course of sessions. We we measure success in inches and appearance, area by area.
Most patients find it tolerable because the needles are very fine and the injections shallow. A topical numbing cream can be applied beforehand if you are sensitive.
No. As of July 2026, mesotherapy is not FDA-approved for fat reduction, cellulite, or any other use, and no standardized formula exists. Formulas differ widely between practices, from phosphatidylcholine and deoxycholate to vitamin, caffeine, and plant-extract blends, so what you would receive is not the same everywhere. Off-label use of prescription ingredients remains legal and routine in cosmetic medicine when a licensed clinician screens the patient and takes responsibility for the treatment; what a practice may not do is advertise the procedure as approved or proven. That is the arrangement you get here, disclosed you start mesotherapy with us.
Mesotherapy works as a series. Most patients need 4 to 6 sessions spaced 1 to 2 weeks apart, depending on the treatment area and desired results. A session itself is quick: your provider cleans the area and places a series of shallow micro-injections across it, and most people head back to their day afterward, with any bruising or swelling settling over a few days. Your provider sets the count by area and goal, and any changes build gradually across the course. Pricing is per session, quoted in writing at the free consultation so you can decide with the number in front of you.
Lipodissolve and “fat-dissolving injections” are marketing names for the same category, injection lipolysis. No mesotherapy or lipodissolve formula holds FDA approval, and Rapid Weight Loss Centers does not market its treatment under those names.
Results are not permanent. How long any improvement holds depends on the area, your skin, and whether your weight stays stable, and your provider will discuss maintenance sessions at the consultation.
